Smart Travel to School

At Ennis National School, we encourage pupils and their families to consider sustainable travel options for their daily commutes. By choosing to walk, cycle, scoot or carpool, we can reduce traffic congestion, lower our carbon footprint, and promote healthier lifestyles.

Walking Bus

One exciting initiative that supports active travel is our daily Walking Bus, which leaves from the Éire Óg GAA pitch ( V95TF82) each morning at 8.30am. Staff and parents walk pupils from there to the school arriving by 8.45am daily. This initiative provides a safe and supervised way for pupils to walk to school together, fostering a sense of community and encouraging physical activity.

The Walking Bus is assisted by dedicated volunteers, including parents and school staff, who assist in ensuring the safety of all participants. Their commitment makes this initiative possible, and we are very grateful for their time and effort.

Participating in the Walking Bus contributes significantly to children’s health. Regular physical activity helps improve cardiovascular fitness, strengthens muscles, and promotes healthy growth and development. Walking also reduces the stress associated with traffic, allowing children to arrive at school feeling calm and ready to learn.

Beyond physical benefits, the Walking Bus offers valuable social opportunities. Children engage with their peers, develop friendships, and learn essential social skills. The shared experience of walking together promotes a sense of belonging and encourages positive interactions among pupils from different classes and age groups.

Car Pools/Car Sharing

We wish to encourage car pools. A car pool or car sharing is when two or more people travel together in one car, instead of separately. If one parent drives pupils to school one day another parent will drive the next day – sharing the job!

Carpark Guidelines

School Car Park is reserved for drop off and pick up of Junior Infants, Senior Infants, Sunshine Classes, 1st and 2nd class children only. Parents/Guardians of older children are requested to drop off and pick up at a meeting point away from the school car park.
